Abstract: Formulation of peel off gel mask from the water extract of gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) (EABG) using base chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been carried out. The objective of this research was to study the characteristics of peel off gel mask EABG using base chitosan and PVA. Peel off gel mask was prepared in five formula with variations of combinations gelling agent PVA: chitosan 10:0, 9.5:0.5, 9:1, 8.5:1.5, and 8:2 that successively named formula I, II, III, IV, and V. The fifth formula of gel mask was characterized including viscocity, gel spreadability, film mask formation time, tensile strength and elongation at break of the film mask, physical stability, and catechin content in the gel mask. The result showed that the increasing concentration of chitosan in the formula caused the appearance of gel mask became more opaque, gel viscocity increased, gel spreadability decreased, film mask formation time reduced, and tensile strength and elongation at break of the film mask decreased. The fifth formula showed good physical stability after cycling test. Catechin content in formula I, II, III, IV, and V respectively were 1.12±0.01%, 1.09±0.01%, 1.24±0.04%, 1.23±0.04%, and 1.15±0.02%. Key word: chitosan, gambir, gel mask, peel off, polyvinyl alcohol.
