Abstract: This paper argues that religious giving is a driving force for social philanthropy in Indonesia. Religious giving is valid in various religious communities in Indonesia, but this paper took the case of religious giving in the Muslim community. By using the result of a public survey “Islamic philanthropy for social justice” implemented by the Center for language and Cultures Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta currently called the Center for the study of Religion and Culture (CSRC), this paper states that the philanthropy usually interpreted with social generosity, is used to refer to the practice of giving and charity in all kinds (including volunteering or volunteerism), but actually also lead to the generosity of activities aimed at limited to providing short-term consumptive needs.
