Abstract: Nur, M.R. The Teaching of English Speaking for Academic Purposes at the University Level, 2017 As Academic English speaking is an advanced skill of English that represents someone‘s intellectual requiring the scholarly competence, the teaching of speaking for academic purposes at the university level becomes very essential to be considered. This research is aiming at analyzing how the lecturer teach and perceive Speaking for Academic purposes at the university level, and how the students perceive the practice of teaching speaking for academic purposes. A descriptive qualitative research was employed by using observation guide, in-depth interview, and documents to answer the research questions. The research shows that the lecturer provided some various speaking genres applied in the classroom, not only emphasized on speaking phrases, but also she preferred focus on communication in the real situation. Also, the lecturer referred a meaning focus approach involving a focus on meaning and a focus on language before a focus on form.
