Abstract: Apoptosis is a cell death process which occurs during development and aging of animal. It is also induced by cytotoxic lymphocytes (CTL), anti-cancer drugs, gamma or uv radiation, a group of citokines called death factor, and deprivation of survival. The morphological changes of apoptosis found in most cell types first involve contraction in cell volume and condensation of the nucleus. When this happens the intracelluler organelles such as the mitochondria retain their normal morphology. As apoptosis prooceeds, blebbing of plasma membrane occurs and the nucleus become fragmented. Finally, the cell itself fragments to from apoptotic bodies that are engulfed by nearby phagocytes. With respect to biochemical changes, it is known that the chromosomes become fragmented into nucleosome unit, and DNA forms characteristic ladder patterns when subjected to agarose gel electhrophoresis.Apoptosis is mediated by a family of proteases called caspases that are activated by processing and regulator of apoptosis are the Bcl-2 family members.
