Abstract: This study was aimed to improve students’ skill in writing descriptive text through clustering technique at class VII-L of SMPN 1 Klari in 2014/2015 Academic Year. The subject of this study was 40 students of class VII-L of SMPN 1 Klari that consisted of 15 males and 25 females. The method used in this study was qualitative method with Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the design. The role of the writer here was as an observer and a teacher who taught writing descriptive text by using clustering technique. This study was conducted in two cycles, in which each cycle consisted of four phases, they were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Each of the cycles itself was done in two meetings. To collect the data, the writer applied three instruments, they were interview, observation, and tests. By the time this study was finished, the result showed that the students’ skill in writing descriptive text was improved after they were taught to write it by using clustering technique. Based on the result of interview, the teacher and the students stated that they were satisfied to the use of clustering technique for it was helpful to generate and organise ideas, so the writing became easier and resulted better. Then, the result of observation revealed that the students performed better in learning from cycle to cycle. Furthermore, the result of tests proved that the mean of the students’ score and the percentage of students who passed the minimum passing criterion were always increasing. The mean of the score itself was 60.23 in pre-test, 68.13 in post-test 1, and 78.88 in post-test 2, while the percentage was 15% or 6 students in pre-test, 52.50% or 21 students in post-test 1, and 75% or 30 students in post-test 2. In conclusion, clustering technique improved the students’ skill in writing descriptive text by benefiting them in generating and organising ideas.
