Abstract: This research focuses on analyzing what needs that cannot be fulfilled by Dan Mulligan as the main character and how he fulfills his needs in Begin Again film using Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory. The writer identifies the characteristic of Dan and analyzes the needs that are not fulfilled and the problem of the main character which revealed alongside his effort to gain back his needs. From the analysis of the film, the writer finds Dan Mulligan characteristics are hard worker, idealist, arrogant, too occupied with his job, and alcoholic. In the context of hierarchy of needs, Dan did not move to the higher level of needs (esteem needs) because his lower needs (love and belonging needs) are not entirely satisfied. He went through unhealthy relationship, got divorce and separated from his daughter. In the end, he gained back love from his friends and family. He got close to his daughter again and he was in healthy relationship with his wife. He found affection, love and trust for each other so his love and belonging needs are entirely satisfied for him. Therefore he could move to the next level of needs and fulfilled his esteem needs. Dan’s characteristics also took an important role to help him in fulfilling his love and belonging and esteem needs.
