Title: The Effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning in Teaching the Simple Past Tense (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of SMK Bintang Nusantara, Tangerang Selatan)

Abstract: The objective of this study is to know whether Contextual Teaching and Learning is effective in teaching the simple past tense at second grade of SMK Bintang Nusantara, Tangerang Selatan. The sample of this study was 47 students taken from second grade of SMK Bintang Nusantara, Tangerang Selatan, the students were 21 students of XI Akuntansi Class, as controlled class and 26 students from Multimedia class, as experimental class. The method which was used in this study was a quantitative method and the design used in this study was a quasi-experimental design. In collecting the data, the writer conducted pre-test and post-test by serving a multiple choice test which consists of 20 items for each test. In analyzing the data, the writer used t-test. According to the result of statistical calculation, the mean score of pre-test in experimental class is 43.90; 66.20 for post test; and 22.30 for gained score. Meanwhile, the mean score of pre-test in controlled class is 60.15; 63.53 for post test; and 3.50 for gained score. Moreover, in the table of significance, it can be seen that on the df = 38 on degree of significance of 5% is 1.68. By comparing the value, to is bigger than tt. The result showed that t-test (to) > t-table (tt) (4.08 > 1.68). It means that, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, this statement is proved that the students who were taught the simple past tense using Contextual Teaching and Learning method got higher score than those who were taught without using Contextual Teaching and Learning method. Thus, it can be concluded that using Contextual Teaching and Learning method is more effective in teaching the simple past tense at the second grade students of SMK Bintang Nusantara, Tangerang Selatan.
